DIY: Wipes Case

I saw this tutorial for decorating a wipes case and thought it was really cute, so I decided to make a couple. I ended up making not just one, but a couple of them. With each new one I made, I found techniques that worked better for me than the original tutorial suggested, so I didn't follow the tutorial to its exact instructions. The instructions below are going to be what worked best for me.

Here's what I used:

- 2 coordinating fabrics
- felt
- hot glue gun
- empty wipes case
- ribbon of your choice
- embellishments of your choice (optional)
- scissors

Note: I used a Pampers brand wipes case. Depending on the brand you use, your measurements may vary a bit. Just be sure to measure to the case size that you are using. Also, depending on the number of strips/blocks of fabric you want, you will cut as many as you need. For this particular tutorial, I used three blocks only (the original tutorial linked above used six).

This is what the wipes case looked like to begin with. Boring, plain white.

First, cut out two pieces of felt in a rectangular shape that will go across the top and bottom of the case. The felt will not need to wrap around the sides of the case, so it just has to barely cover each surface. Keep this in mind when measuring and cutting. Mine measured about 4.5" x 7".

Next, cut out three blocks of fabric, which will be used to cover the top of your case. This fabric will need to wrap around the sides of the case, so be generous when you are measuring and cutting. Mine were approximately 7" x 4" for the side pieces, and 7" x 6" for the center piece.

Center the outer pieces of fabric onto the felt. Remember, because the fabric needs to wrap around the sides of the case, be sure to leave some excess fabric hanging off the sides of the felt. It's always easy to cut off excess, but not so easy to fix it if you come up short. Use hot glue and glue down.

For the center piece, fold over the seams on both the left and right sides and use hot glue to hold down the folded seams. This step is necessary so that the fabric on the top of your case does not fray on the seams.

Next, center the center piece of fabric in the middle of the felt, overlapping the sides of the two pieces that you have already glued down. Glue this piece down.

All done with the gluing the top piece of your case! This is what the top and bottom should look like.

Now is where you want to add any ribbon/embellishments you would like to use. The original tutorial didn't do this until the fabric was already glued onto the case. But I found it easier to decorate before it was attached. I added a strip of brown ribbon, and a few little diamond embellishments.

Next, we will put together the piece of fabric that will cover the bottom of the case. The bottom is much easier and quicker, since it doesn't have to be as nice and decorative.

Cut out a piece of fabric to go across the bottom, making sure to leave lots of extra fabric going around the sides. Remember, it's always easier to cut off excess when you have too much, rather than coming up short.

Using the hot glue gun, center the second piece of felt onto the fabric and glue the fabric to the felt together.

Glue the bottom piece of fabric/felt that you have prepared onto the bottom of the case.

Trim the excess fabric that you have going around your case.

Using the hot glue gun, go around the sides of the case and attach the edges of the fabric onto your case.

Note: Glue a little bit at a time so that the glue is nice and hot and the fabric attaches well. If you try to glue too much at a time and the glue begins to cool and harden, your fabric will not hold onto the case very well.

Repeat the same process for your top (more decorative) piece of fabric. Center the fabric on top of the case, use hot glue to glue it down, trim off any excess fabric hanging over the edges, then use hot glue to go around the sides and glue down the edges.

Lastly, glue on some thin ribbon on both edges of the top and bottom of the case, hiding all the edges of the fabric that have been glued on. I started this on the backside so that the ribbon seam would be less visible.

When you have wrapped the ribbon around all the case and have almost glued back to your starting point, fold in the edge, use hot glue to hold the folded seam, then glue down. This folded seam will prevent any fraying of the ribbon.

All done!

Here are two more cases that I have made. As you can see, the number of strips/blocks of fabric you use can vary. I had a lot of fun playing with the different configurations that can be done. Feel free to mix it up a bit and do a style that best suits you. (Note the super cute Hello Kitty ribbon on the second case below. Yay for Target's $1 bins! )

Hey! Got your PM from 3/17...I'm a slacker about checking PMs. The site wouldn't let me reply, I have no idea why. Glad to see you are doing well, and I'm sorry for being MIA!!!
